Short Tutorial/FAQ – How Can I Tell if It's a Chatbot or a Human?

Download Graphics to View Question: When I'm chatting on a website to get customer service help, are there ways to determine if the responses are coming from a chatbot or a human?

Answer: With advancements in AI, it's getting more difficult to spot chatbots, but it's not impossible. Try these tips:
  1. Look for repetition. If you notice the "person" you're chatting with keeps returning to the same recommendation or solution no matter what you say, you might be dealing with a chatbot. If they literally repeat the phrasing each time, that's an even stronger indication, because humans tend to change how they phrase things.

  2. Note the response speed. Chatbots can generate responses much more quickly than humans. If the other party is able to instantly give you information that a human should reasonably have to take time to look up, you're either dealing with a chatbot or the most talented customer service rep in the world.

  3. Try asking complex or probing questions. If you suspect you're not chatting with a human, ask for their opinion about a recent event or a topic that requires critical thinking. Then watch how they respond.

  4. Use the direct approach. You can simply ask "Are you a chatbot or a real person?" If the response is "I'm a real person" but you still have doubts, follow it up with "What color are your shoes?" A chatbot has no feet, so it will struggle with a response.
