Short Tutorial/FAQ – How Often Should I Take Screen Breaks?

Download Graphics to View Question: I've heard that too much time staring at my computer can cause physical problems. What's the recommended frequency for taking screen breaks?

Answer: You're smart to ask this question, since regular screen breaks throughout your day will help reduce the negative effects of prolonged screen time. Those effects include eye strain, fatigue, and headaches — all caused by your eye muscles having to focus on something just inches away for too long.

When you take regular screen breaks from your computer (or tablet or phone), it gives your eyes a chance to rest by focusing on something farther away. It also provides opportunities for you to get up, move around, stretch, and readjust your posture.

Many health experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule as the bare minimum for screen breaks. This means that every 20 minutes, you need to look at something approximately 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Make it a habit and see if it helps!
