Will Ferrell's first leading role was in the movie Elf.

This 2003 Christmas movie has become a classic, thanks in part to Will Ferrell's portrayal of the elf named Buddy. It was producer Jon Berg who suggested Ferrell for the role, because despite being known only from Saturday Night Live and having never played a leading role, Berg felt Ferrell had the innocence necessary to portray the character.

Elf proved that Ferrell could carry a feature, although he didn't become a full-blown star until Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Despite the success of Elf, Ferrell turned down $29 million in 2013 to be in an Elf sequel, saying this to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live: "Absolutely not ... I just think it would look slightly pathetic if I tried to squeeze back in the elf tights as Buddy the middle-aged elf."
